Riverdale Teachers Honored with Certificate of Heroism After Protecting Students from Hornets Nest

At Riverdale K-8, courage and quick action turned a frightening situation into a story of true heroism. During recess, a student was attacked by a swarm of yellow jackets when teachers Sydney King, Shannon Smith, Madeline Brown, and Izzy Nobert immediately rushed in to help. Without hesitation, they pulled the student to safety, shielding them from further stings.

In the midst of the chaos, one teacher—despite knowing she was allergic—still chose to step in. Another teacher discovered her own allergy only after being stung multiple times. She experienced a medical emergency but was quickly cared for by Riverdale’s nurses, Sarah Nail and Colleen Cheatham, who administered an EpiPen and ensured her safety.

Thanks to the swift actions of these educators and nurses, both the student and staff members are now doing well. The following day, all four teachers were honored with the Certificate of Heroism, an award given by Coordinated School Health (CSH), Riverdale Elementary, and GMSD’s HR Department to recognize those who provide lifesaving aid during a medical crisis.

This moment serves as a powerful reminder of the bravery and dedication of GMSD educators—individuals who put the well-being of students before their own without hesitation.
